Author Spotlight w/ C.Monet

Happy Monday loves, we have the author Queen Pen with us today. (Inserts Screams and Applause) You know the drill kick back and let's get it popping

QueenPen: The QueenPen of urban fiction grew up fascinated by urban fiction and as a teenager she began writing her own stories under that genre. She is currently finishing her degree in Creative Writing with a focus in Fiction. She hopes to follow in the footsteps of her favorite urban authors, Sister Soulja, Deja Joy King and Nikki Turner. QueenPen’s writing style is a mesh of all three of these authors but with her own twist in each story that she writes. Her stories include depictions of people who grow up poor but become hood famous or drug kingpins that fight for their territory and their lives.

QueenPen hopes to become an upcoming best-selling author within the urban fiction genre and she also wants to create more awareness for urban fiction. Dust 2 Diamonds: An Urban Fairy tale is her debut novel and there are many more to come!

Me: Alright Welcome honey, lets get started. Why did you make the decision to become a published author?

I had characters that continued to talk to me. I actually started writing a book about 10 years ago that was a fiction spin off of my life and that was when I knew I wanted to be an author. I still plan on publishing my first book down the line but new characters and ideas came to me and they were the push I needed to write and publish my first book!

ME: Who is your biggest supporter? And how?

I have such a huge support system but I would have to say my husband is my biggest supporter. If he knows I need to write because my characters have been talking to me, he asks if I need anything and then simply leaves me alone. He has also somehow transformed into my agent for my books which I think is super cute. It was his idea for me to start selling my clothing brand that ties in with my books and he is currently working on my first book signing!

Me: Who/What is the biggest influence with your writing style?

Simple, urban lit! I learn from every urban author I have read. I have read hundreds of books and I take little pieces from them all!

Me: What genres do you write or wish to write?

I write urban fiction and that will always be my main love but I also have some really great romance fiction ideas that I think I will eventually get out there one day!

Me: When it comes to writing, are you a morning person or a night owl?

I honestly do a lot of writing during the day while I am at work if it’s slow so I would say morning/day but my characters talk to me the most when I am sleeping which is hilarious and annoying all at the same time! I’m like an old woman and am in bed at eight every night so I get crabby when my characters won’t shut up! I get my best ideas at night, though which is awesome! A blessing and a curse!

Me: What does a writing session look like for you?

Quiet. I need complete silence when writing and I need to be able to hone in and focus! I do a unique thing with my books, though and I create a soundtrack for my chapters. Each chapter title is a song title so in the middle of a chapter or when I am finished writing it and I get a feel for what the chapter is about/like, I spend a lot of time finding the right song that has a good title for my chapter. In that instance, I do listen to music!

Me: If you were to write a book about yourself what would you name it? Why? What celebrity would you use for your character?

Ahhh…this ties into a question above. I actually have a book about myself (a fiction spinoff). This is super exclusive insight right here but the title of it is Good Girl Gone Bad.

What celebrity would I have play me? I think Lauren London. We favor each other a little bit plus she talks like me and she can pull off my swag Loll!

Me: What is one myth you would like to clear up about the literary world?

That not all authors support each other. It’s true that most don’t but it isn’t hard to find authors that can help guide you and that become true friends! Take Author C. Monet for example! She’s great and has helped me a ton! I have much love for her!

Me: Describe your latest release in one word:

Me: What would you tell an aspiring author?

If you do your research, publishing (self-publishing or through a publisher) is fairly easy and you shouldn’t be intimidated by it. I published my first book by myself without any help. Don’t be discouraged and do not give up! Don’t pay attention to Amazon rankings. It’s great if you get in that top 100 or even top 10 spot but it will take time! Pay more attention to your reviews. Learn from them and allow them to motivate you!

Me: What can the reader expect from reading one of your novels?

From the feedback, I have received and based on what I want my readers to experience, you can expect…cliffhangers. I want you to feign for the next book! I am a huge fan of series so you can expect more series than stand-alones and above all, you can expect a lot of emotions. If I can make my readers cry through my characters because they have fallen in love with them, then mission accomplished!
